Under 11yrs Primary Midway League

The Under 11yrs Team: Luke Hoult, Owen King, Ayush Panchal, Lewis Whyley, Louie Stevenson, Eve Durrance, Tilly Dale, Emily Gallacher, Emma Thornley, Sophie Watson.

On a soggy Sunday morning the County U/11 team made their way up to Sheffield to compete in the National Primary Midway Badminton Tournament. The first two opponents were local rivals Derbyshire and Warwickshire both matches were tough, the Leicestershire team fought hard but lost both matches 6-4. Match three was against Yorkshire, Leicestershire got off to a flying start, halving all the singles, winning both boys doubles, and halving the girls doubles. The match ended with a great finale and the Leicestershire team won 7-3. Match four was v Cheshire 1st team.

Leicestershire lost 3 out of the 4 singles games but fought back to halve the level doubles. Going into the final discipline it was really exciting, Leicestershire knew they needed to win the
last mixed game to secure a draw, but unfortunately Cheshire proved too strong, and won the overall match 6-4. The next
two matches went Leicestershire’s way 9-1 win v Lancashire and an 8-2 win v Cheshire 2nd team. At the moment it puts them in 4th place going into the 2nd leg on March 8th , where I am sure they will be fighting to improve that position.

A great days Badminton for the under 11yrs.

Rowan and Sameer get Gold

Rowan and Sameer cruised through the group phase of the doubles with wins of 21-5,
21-13 and 21-13.That then put them through to the Semi final against Goode and Goddard from
Hertfordshire. ( Harry Goode is the son of England Legends Jo Goode and Andy Goode) This was a rematch from the U12 Leicester invitational final. On that occasion Rowan and Sameer won 21-13. On this occasion however it was a much tighter affair with both pairs playing some fantastic badminton, but it was once again Rowan and Sameer who came out on top 21-19. In final they came up across the biggest and strongest pair in the draw from Warwickshire, In fact Rowan was about a foot shorter than his opponents.
The start of the match went totally the way of the Warwickshire pair, leading 11-6 at the mid way point. It was as though the Leicestershire pair were stunned by their opponents size and power. As the pair changed ends I (Anthony Clark LSBA coach and father of Rowan)shouted out to Rowan that the match wasn’t over and they could still win.
That seemed to ignite the after burners because Rowan and Sameer started to play some incredible badminton. They managed to claw back the lead and move past their bigger opponents with real skill and determination. from 11-6 down they turned it round into a 21-16 win. All in all it was a great display of junior badminton with all four boys playing fantastically well. But it was the Leicestershire pair that possessed that extra bit of class on the day.It was a fantastic day for Leicestershire badminton with a gold medal for Sameer Chenia in the boys singles, gold for Rowan Clark and Sameer Chenia in the
boys doubles. Finally a Bronze medal in the girls doubles for Jessica Allen and
Jess Rodgers.

As the Performance Director for LSBA I was left emotional and so proud of all the Leicestershire players, not just the ones in this event. We are now
starting to win medals in all age groups. This is down to the fact that our players are training more regularly and also down to the fact they are working incredibly hard in every session they attend. The future certainly looks bright
for Leicestershire badminton.

U13s Continue the Leicestershire Gold Rush

The under 15s had set the standard high in Nottingham and the smaller under 13 group of 5 players really wanted to keep the medals flowing into Leicestershire, and so they did in the West Midlands U13 Bronze Circuit tournament …

Sameer: Gold Boys Singles

Sameer and Rowan: Gold Boys Doubles

Jess and Jess: Bronze Girls Doubles

A special mention also goes to U11 Emily Gallacher in her first Bronze event, coming away with 2 excellent wins.  Watch this space!

U15 Leicestershire players triumphing in Nottinghamshire Bronze JC

Great performance by Leicestershire badminton players at Nottinghamshire U15 bronze tournament. Leicestershire featured in the boys singles and all the doubles finals! Martin took gold in the boys singles and teamed up with Ella to win the mixed. Nikhil took silver with his Notts partner in the boys doubles and Ella and Hritika took the silver in the girls doubles. Tom and Martin took the bronze in the boys doubles and Tom teamed up with Issy to take the bronze in the mixed. Eve, Marcus and Sam also put in some impressive performances in the singles and doubles showing how much their hard work in training is paying off. Well done all!!

U15’s v Yorkshire 2

TEAM – Ella Haines, Eve Dale, Isabel Paterson-Watts, Jolie Haywood, Tom Cowperthwaite, Tom Lund, Martin Beynon, Nikhil Chotai and Ryan King

After a rainy drive up the motorway the match kicked off with the mixed doubles.

Ella and Martin had a tough 3 games in which they fought to take the 2nd game. A couple of unlucky net shots in the final game and a strong Yorkshire pair meant they lost as did Tom C and Jolie despite some great back of court play from Tom.
Eve and Ryan and Issy and Nikhil did really well to both win in 2 games. This with Nikhil not feeling too well!

Leics 2- Yorks 2

Next came the singles.
Issy, Jolie and Ella both fought hard against tough opponents but unfortunately lost in 2 games. Eve played a fantastic, nail biting match, in which she just lost the 1st game, won the 2nd 22-20 and won the 3rd 21-19 with everyone watching and cheering her on.
Martin and Nikhil played brilliantly to win their matches, Martin showing great movement around the court. Tom C and Tom L played some fabulous shots but unfortunately were beaten by strong Yorkshire players.

Leics 5 – Yorks 7

Next was the doubles so the pressure was on.
Issy and Eve took a while to get going but played well to take the second game, then just couldn’t close it losing the 3rd. Ella and Jolie worked well together as a pair but just couldn’t hold off the strong Yorkshire pair.
Both boys teams of Ryan and Tom L and Martin and Tom C played really well to win in 2 games. Some great defensive play from both teams.

Leics 7 – Yorks 9

Then came the crossover games.
Again everyone worked hard and the fitness work that they have been doing has definitely paid off! After the first girls crossover doubles the match was Leics 7 – Yorks 10. ….. the remaining doubles matches were tight, 1 game all……it was all down to the deciding games whether we could secure a draw with a possible win, but unfortunately those games were lost too despite some fabulous play.

Final score Leics 7 – Yorks 13

Well done to all players.
