Under 14’s Team Event – York

Team – Sameer Chenia, Harry Clare, Joe Goodenough, Rowan Clark, Tom Paterson-Watts, Luke Hoult, Jess Rodgers, Izzy Pike, Jess Allen, Tamsin Betts, Sophie Watson, Tilly Dale

Start of the event and all the managers were called to the desk, two of the teams had been seeded – Lothian and Surrey, we then had to pick at random to decide which teams were in each box.

Our first box had Lothian, Lancashire and Notts, first game up Lothian.

The team was carefully selected, the first two opening games were won, can we get two more to win the match, another 3 games won first match in the bag. Leicestershire 5, Lothian 2

Next up Lancashire, we have a small team reshuffle and we’re ready to go, after some tough games its two games each, we need to take at least two more to win the match. The players step up to the mark and we win all the remaining games. Leicestershire 5, Lancashire 2

Last game in the box our local rivals Notts. A few more team changes and we’re off. Notts win both the singles, can we pull it back. The whole team play their socks of in the remaining games, it pays off and we win the next 5 games.

Leicestershire 5, Notts 2

Winners and runners up of the box meet each other in the next round.

New boxes are announced. Leicestershire, Warwickshire, Surrey and Lothian.

As we met Lothian in the first round we only need to play Warwickshire and Surrey.

First games announced and we are up against Warwickshire our local nemesis.

Time to get our heads together and select the team.

Singles first, two really tough games, Warwickshire take them both. Two doubles games play, one boys, one girls and we’re drawing at 2 each. The team have got their work cut out if we are to take this match from Warwickshire. The next girls doubles finishes and another one for us. The boys play the final doubles and we need this one to secure the match as Warwick have put their best players in the mixed. Fantastic play by the boys and another win to Leicester, the match won. Can we take the mixed to keep consistent with our other matches of a 5-2 score. The players step up and its edge of your seat stuff. It’s all down to the final point as the games at 20-20. Boom our players win the point and the crowd erupts. Leicestershire 5, Warwickshire 2

Next game Surrey, both Leicestershire and Surrey going into the match having won all of their matches today.

Time to get our heads together for the final team selection.

After a small reshuffle we’re ready to play.

Singles played and we’re one all. Boy’s doubles played and we’re two all. Next up the girls doubles, the girls play with all they have and it pays off, both games won and we’ve won the match. Can we win the last game to keep our consistent score of 5-2. The mixed pair play brilliantly together and take the last game. The teams hard work and determination pays off. Leicestershire 5, Surrey 2

We’ve only gone and won the gold, the players and the parents go wild!!!!!

A fantastic day for all the players who truly deserved their medals.

I would just like to thank Ant and Ian for their help with the team selection.

A special mention to Tilly Dale for the amazing team spirit she displayed all day.

Under 14’s Midway Second Leg

Sunday 6th March – Under 14’s off to Sheffield for the second leg.

The team – Sameer, Harry, Joe, Teiren, Jess A, Tasmin, Izzy and debut for Sophie Watson.

The draws have been made and we have a tough one with both Cheshire and Lancashire 1 in our group.

First up Cheshire, most of the games were very close with a couple of them 15-14, some we took others Cheshire managed to take. We managed to win the match 8 -2, luck was on our side.

Next a really tough match against Lancashire 1, the team all fight hard in their games and again a lot of the matches are to the wire with four of the matches finishing at 15-14, this time luck was not on our side and Lancashire took 3 of those games. Lancashire took the match 7-3.

Second in the group. Break before the 2nd round, time for the mums to have a bit of fizz (well it is Mothering Sunday)

Next round.

All Midlands group with Leicestershire, Derbyshire and Notts, a replay of the first round, can we win this group again, fingers crossed.

Some great skill showed from our players when playing Derbyshire and the only game we lost was another 15-14. Match won 9-1.

Now for Nottingham, in the last leg the score was 5-5, we managed to take it on points, can we improve this time around. The team seem to like taking the games to the wire today and getting as much play as possible with another couple of games at 15-14. Luck was on our side this time and we managed to win the match 9-1.

This group won – overall 4th place.

U13 Shires League Inter-County Match Report

Leicestershire vs Yorkshire 1

15th March 2015

We knew this wasn’t going to be an easy match as Yorkshire have so many players to choose from but our kids had fighting spirit and wouldn’t let that put them off.

Mixed doubles

Mixed doubles first, Leicester came out with fighting spirit. Our 4 pairs went on knowing that this was going to be hard we played all of our first games unfortunately losing the 1st 3rd and 4th pairs to York but Ollie and Jess Rodgers had to be the highlight as both York and Leicester had won 1 game each it all came down to the 3rd game they were doing so well as it was 19-19 and then it got into the 20s 22-22, 23-23 as it got to 24-23 our players just lost out and it was unfortunate win to York 25-23.

Boys singles

Our players had to shake the mixed off them, and come on to the boys singles, first was Harry and Rowen against the Yorkshire top Seeds they did everything they could to win, unfortunately Harry came off losing the first and second games 21-11 21-12 to York. Rowen kept on fighting but it just wasn’t enough as this boy was very strong. Next up Ollie and Joe, Ollie went on having a quite tough boy he did all he could as he always has a fighting spirit in him to try and win every point he can. Unfortunately Ollie came off having lost 21-13 and 21-17 to York. Joe also had a tough game playing against a strong boy he unfortunately lost too 21-15 and 21-14.

Girls Singles

Can the girls do any better Tamsin and Izzy went on first as Jess R and Jess A had just come off from a hard mixed, hopefully we can get a win. Tamsin had a great game and fought her best and finally we have a win, with the score of 21-12 and 21-19, well done tamsin! Izzy in her first County game came out fighting hard but lost 15-21 and 6-21. Jess and Jess fort hard against there 1st and 2nd seeded players but unfortunately lost.

Boys Doubles

Harry and Ollie played both pairs trying to get revenge from the singles unfortunately these boys were a good pair and Harry and Ollie despite trying their hardest and not giving up, lost in a close game.

Rowen and Joe also played both pairs also trying to get revenge but these boys were also a good pair as they lost 21-10 and 21-15 to the first pair and 21-13 and 21-8 to the second pair.

Girls doubles

Jess and Jess went on trying to beat them this time round these girls were just too powerful and had lots of energy to keep going as so did ours but our girls unfortunately lost 21-14 and 21-16 to York that was the first pair. Second pair close games as it was another win to York losing 21-11 and 22-20 to York. Hope fully Tamsin and Sophie can win these 2 matches yes another win to Leicester as Tamsin and Sophie won against the second pair 21-19 and 21-13 to Leicester they also played against the strong pair and did so well to get 19 points off them 21-19 to York and 21-12 to York.

At the end of the day Leicester lost 18-2 but our kids did so well to get 2 games of them as they were so strong a very good fight and the team should be very proud.

U13 Shires League – Leicestershire vs Norfolk

U13 Shires League Inter-County Match Report

Leicestershire vs Norfolk

7th December 2014

This was going to be another tough match after our recent loss to Bucks.

Norfolk had recently played Bucks and had managed to take 8 games from them opposed to our 5.

Mixed doubles was first as always.

Sameer and Jess Rodgers were up against tough opposition. After a loss in the first game, Sameer and Jess needed to work hard to pull it back, they worked brilliantly together and managed to pull the next game out of the bag, deciding game to be played. After a game fought with much spirit the game was very close, they lost out to a score of 20-22.

Harry and Sophie worked well together and after a first tough game with a score of 22-20, they needed to keep up the hard work for the next game, they took another win with the score of 21-18.

Rowan and Jess Allen won their first game with a score of 21-8, Norfolk step the pace up in the second game and manage to take the game. The deciding game could go either way. Rowan and Jess know what they needed to do to with the next game and take the match. They step up to the mark and win the next game, another win under our belts.

Ollie and Tamzin take on the final Norfolk pair and manage to take two convincing wins, another one for Leicestershire

Mixed Leicester 3, Norfolk 1

Now for the Boys Singles, we were expecting some tough games and the boys knew they needed to play to their very best. Sameer, Harry, Rowan and Joe were ready to take on the Norfolk boys. The boys all won their first games. Could they repeat it again in their next games? Yes was the answer to that and Leicester’s boys took all 4 matches.

Boys singles Leicester 4, Norfolk 0

Girls Singles, this was always going to be another tough challenge for our girls. Jess R fought hard for every point in the first game, the final score being 16-21, again in the next game Jess but her all into it but Norfolk managed to take the game. Sophie played her best but another win for Norfolk.

Two matches to Norfolk, could we manage to pull it back.

Jess A had a very tough first game and Norfolk took this one, game two and Jess fought hard for every point in this game, her hard work and determination played off as Jess took the second game. Now for the decider, either team could take this game. Jess was riding high from her win in the previous game, she clearly had the opposition rattled and used this to her advantage, another win for Jess.

Could Tamzin win the next match and make it a draw for the girls.

Tamzin stepped up to play some great badminton, Tamzin took a comfortable lead early on in both games and kept hold of the lead to win both games.

Girls Singles Leicester 2, Norfolk 2

Boys Doubles – Can the boys take the advantage from winning the singles into the doubles?

Sameer and Joe are first up, some great play from both teams but Leicester take the lead early on in the first game and hold onto it throughout, one game in the bag. The Norfolk pair step up a gear in the next game but again Sameer and Joe take an early lead and another game and match to the Leicester boys. Next up is Harry and Ollie, again both teams are showing the fighting spirit, Harry and Ollie also take an early lead and use this to their advantage for another win. Game two plays out like the first game and another game and match to our boys.

Now for the crossover, Sameer and Joe cruise and take two comfortable wins from both games 21-5 to our boys, another match won.

Harry and Ollie prepare to take on Norfolk’s number one pair. First game and the Norfolk boys have a determination to take a game from us. Harry and Ollie play to their best and manage to win the tightly contested game. Can they do the same in their next game? The second match played out much like the first with Norfolk trying to take the game from us. Harry and Ollie gave it their all and again come out on top. Another match to Leicester.

Another 4 out of 4 for the boys.

Boys Doubles Leicester 4, Norfolk 0

Girl’s doubles – Time for the girls to show Norfolk what they are made off.

First up against Norfolk’s number one pair Jess R and Jess A. Some brilliant badminton from both teams, our girls put up a good fight but Norfolk manage to pip them to the post in both games, first match to Norfolk.

Sophie and Tamzin take on the second Norfolk pair, both teams were playing with a determination to win the game, Leicester’s girls came out on top to take the game. The second game played out easier and our girls cruised to a 21-6 win.

Cross over time…

Time for Jess R and Jess A to play Norfolk’s second pair. They take the first game with a score of 21-12. Can they take the second game to win the match? The Norfolk girl’s game out fighting and both teams fought hard for every point. The girls managed to pip them to the post with a close score of 25-23.

Sophie and Tamzins turn to play Norfolk’s first pair. Both teams worked hard to try and claim the victory but Norfolk managed to come out on top in both games to take the match.

Girls Doubles Leicester 2, Norfolk 2

The whole team played some great badminton and took us to a great victory.

Overall score Leicester 15, Norfolk 5

Under 13’s Leicestershire V Buckinghamshire

U13 Shires League Inter-County Match Report

Leicestershire vs Buckinghamshire

16th November 2014

This was never going to be an easy match. In 2013, Leicester U13 squad lost 20-0 to Bucks, in 2014 they closed the gap to 15-5. Can the 2015 U13 Leicester team, who have been training like dervishes over the past months, under a new training regime prevail against a team full of players many of whom play at the U13 England Gold tournaments?

Confidence was high, coming off the back of a great Nottingham win previously. The hall was cold and hoodies were a prerequisite.

Mixed doubles was of course first and there were some spirited fights underway from the start, this was not going to be the push over Bucks were expecting. Whilst we lost all the opening mixed matches, the highlight was Harry and Jess Rodgers games, they fought tenaciously and nearly turned the tide against Ryhdram and Lisa from Bucks, but we saw a close defeat of 19-21 and 17-21 from their games.

Leicester 0, Bucks 4…

Up next Boys Singles, hopes were high. Sameer, Harry, Rowan and Ollie went in on the attack. Harry, Rowan and Ollie all won their 1st round games – looking good, can they hold onto the Win? Bucks looked worried but fought back, taking all the 2nd round games across the board and forcing the 3rd game to be played. Despite some utterly heroic efforts Harry and Rowan lost their 3rd games. Ollie fought on, he would not let it go, every shot mattered and he won through taking the 3rd game 21-19, finally Leicester have a win, Well Done Ollie!

Leicester 1, Bucks 7…

Girls Singles, this was always going to be challenge for our girls facing off against some of the best U13 out there. Sophie, Tamzin, Jess and Jess fought hard including some inspired play from Jess Rodgers taking 20+ points from the 2nd ranked bucks player. But Bucks took all 4 games.

Leicester 1, Bucks 11…

Boys Doubles – can the guys take their learning’s from the singles matches and capitalise on discovered weaknesses of the Bucks lads. Sameer and Joe are first up and we have a thrilling 3 set match, resulting in them taking the Win! Next up is Harry and Ollie (having recovered from his marathon singles Win), they also take an awesome 3 set match win!! Then its Sameer and Joe who take apart their opposition in a 2 set match cruising 21-7 and 21-6 with another Win!!! Then Harry and Ollie breeze past their opponents with a 21-9 and 21-9 Win!!!! 4 for 4 what a great double results for the boys!

Leicester 5, Bucks 11…

Can the girls do the same as the boys? Despite some amazing play from all 4 Leicester girls including a spirited attack from Jess and Jess taking the Bucks lead ranked girls to 16-21 and 18-21, the Bucks team took all 4 matches.

Overall Leicester 5, Bucks 15…

A loss, but a great fight and a massive improvement on last years score. The team can be rightly proud.

Under 13s Start Season with Victory in Local Derby

Nottinghamshire U13s vs Leicestershire U13s

The morning of the first shires match for the current crop of Leicestershire Under 13s had finally arrived. Good things were expected after all of the hard work that had been put in at training over the past 2 months. Only time would tell if those expectations were to be realised against local rivals Notts.

It didn’t take long for the first point to be put on the board with Sameer and Sophie taking a comfortable win. Harry and Jess Rodgers were made to work much harder for their victory with the first 2 games being shared having each gone to setting, but the Leicestershire pair coming through in the 3rd game. Another great victory in the third match, with Joe and Tamsin putting the disappointment of losing the first game behind them, to come back and win the next two fairly comfortably. A fairly comfortable victory for Ollie and Jess Allen rounded of a perfect start to the day.

Up next were the boy’s singles. At first it appeared that Leicestershire were going to run away with this round of games too, with all four of the first games being won to 17. Unfortunately only Sameer and Ollie were able to take advantage of the good start and take the win with the Notts boys showing some fight to reverse the other games.

In contrast to the mixed games, the girls singles were over in the blink of an eye. Jess A and Tamsin picking up convincing wins to make sure that the singles were tied.

Just as in the mixed, the level doubles produced some great, closely fought games. Harry and Rowan obviously wanted to get as much court time as possible and demonstrate their fitness, with them winning both of their matches 2-1 with two of their final three games being settled. Sameer and Joe picked up both of their matches too, carrying on the great partnership from the previous season.

A strong Notts girls pair spoiled our attempt to be 100% wins in doubles but only after our girls took them to setting for their win. The girls did it up though, with Sophie and Tamsin then Jess and Jess picking up victories against their second pair.

So just like last year Leicestershire start off their Shires League campaign with a satisfying victory against their local rivals. Bring on Bucks next week!
