Primary Schools Badminton Tournament

Leicester Leys Leisure Centre, Thursday 21 May 2015

Newcomers triumphant

Leicester City Community Badminton Network staged its fifth primary school badminton tournament of the season at Leicester Leys Leisure Centre.

For Avenue Primary this was their first entry into a junior badminton competition, but the school team performed admirably against some very competitive Catherine Juniors pairs.

The semi finals produced two very close matches. Lily Dawson and Ned Davis for Avenue were neck and neck with Catherine’s Krish Patel and Ritika Patel and were tied at 9-9. In a tense final rally the latter placed their final shot marginally outside of the court to give victory to the Avenue pair. In the second semi final Catherine’s Nenad Piperski and Kalias Jones were well behind Avenue’s Saleh Khalel and Sukhpreet Sahi, but fought back well, snatching the tie 10-9.

In the final, the pairs were tied at 8-8 until Dawson and Davis produced some very accurate serving and forced errors from the Catherine pair, running out winners 11-8.

Both schools now move on the Top Primary Schools Tournament to be held at Aylestone Leisure Centre on Friday 26 June 2015, 4 – 6.15pm.

It’s an All Knighton Fields Final

Forty four children from four primary schools, Catherine Juniors, Knighton Fields, Stokes Wood and Thurnby Lodge, met recently to contest the third Leicester City Community Badminton Network badminton tournament of the season at Rushey Mead Secondary school.

Stokes Wood entered the first ever year 3 squad to play in these events and gave an excellent account of themselves despite not reaching the later stages. In the quarter finals Thurnby Lodge were represented by five pairs, Knighton Fields by two pairs and Catherine Juniors by a single pair. Top seeds Tom Platzer and George Blount from Knighton met Catherine Juniors top pair and trailed early on by 3 points. However, the Knighton pair rallied and won comfortably in the end. In the other semi final Knighton’s Troy Bradley and Malachi Phipps had a tremendous battle against Dylan Talbott and Milan Bilimoria from Thurnby Lodge edging them on the final point of the contest, and producing an all Knighton final.

In the final Platzer and Blount lived up to their top seeding by producing some fine attacking badminton and beating fellow school mates, Bradley and Phipps by 11-5.

Rushey Mead at the Double

Rushey Mead Primary School achieved their second win in Leicester City Community Badminton Network’s series of primary badminton tournaments. 8 pairs from both Rushey Mead and Sandfield Close took part in a badminton doubles contest at Beaumont Leys School. Both schools had 100% turnout and the event was well supported by parents.

The quarter finals provided two exciting ties with Rushey’s Moksh Handa and Saraanhusen Sabirhusen edging Sandfield’s Arian Basra and Shiv Dattani 15-14, and Sandfields’ Sonia Shah and Dhavina Patel going through by the same score against Rushey’s Abinaya Rajenthiram and Malakai Dunn.

In the semi finals Moksh Handa and Saraanhusen Sabirhusen overpowered team mates Bhavik Arvind and Bagirdan Dharmalingam, whilst Palupreet Kaur and Cameron Rahman from Rushey Mead had a much harder task in beating Sonia Shah and Dhavina Patel.

In an all Rushey Mead final, Palupreet Kaur and Cameron Rahman relied heavily on the quality of their serve to gain points. However, in the rallies, Moksh Handa and Saraanhusen Sabirhusen were dominant, running out winners 21-9.
