Eve celebrates end of exams with gold!

Having finished her GCSE’s the week before, Eve Dale travelled north to the Thornby Pavilion Leisure Centre for the Durham U18 Open and the last tournament of the season.

Playing mixed doubles today with Danny Hyde from Lancashire, Eve progressed through to the semi-finals after 2 straight sets wins in the group stages before booking a place in the final after a close 3 set game against the seconds seeds Richards and Hooper.

Despite losing the first end 21-17 to top seeds Ryan Curtis and Megan Hassall, Eve & Danny came back strongly to take the second 21-19 before coming out victors in the 3rd and deciding end 24-22 to win gold once again!

Congratulations Eve!

U14’s in action at Cerryg Davies Mixed

After their fantastic recent achievements in the Shires League, the U14’s came together one last time to round off an amazing season at the York Railway Institute for the Cerryg Davies Memorial Mixed Doubles tournament on Saturday 10th June. Team Manager for the day was Carole Spencer.

With U14 team regulars Tilly Dale and Ayush Panchal missing, the team welcomed 2 younger players into the ranks for a day which saw the 4 Leicestershire pairs of Sophie Watson & Luke Hoult, Evie Pike & Tom Platzer, Grace Sherwin & Owen King and Carly Stevenson & Lewis Whyley compete against teams from Lothian, Yorkshire (with 3 teams!), Lancashire, Warwickshire, Cheshire, Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and various teams fielding players from different counties. All in all, 48 mixed pairs took part with a range of ages and abilities for a fun day of mixed doubles.

Each pair played for places as an individual pair which also then earned points for the whole team with each pair striving to finish as high up the order as possible in order to earn as many points as they could for their county. After a packed schedule which saw each pair play at least 12 games of mixed doubles, the points were tallied and the players gathered round the referees desk to hear the final results. This time around, Leicestershire finished in the bronze medal place behind runners-up Lancashire and winners Warwickshire, a great result for the team. Congratulations also go to Sophie & Luke who were silver medallists in the individual competition, just missing out on the top spot to Warwickshire’s Natasha Morris & Joseph Scott.

Well done to all the players!

U12 County Championships 2017

A very well done to all the players who participated in the county championships this weekend. After a long season for a lot of the younger players, there were fantastic games, great achievements, huge improvements, brilliant debuts and a real sporting and supportive atmosphere.

The day started with the singles. In the boys, after some competitive group games, Mitchell Allen, William Sewell, Baptiste Broquet and Jack Weston finished top 2 in their respective groups and went on to play in the main draw semi-finals, William and Mitchell being the winners and going onto the final, both undefeated on the day. Knowing that it would be a cracking final, the boys took to the court and proved worthy of being finalists, both showing determination and grit in order to get the edge over their opponent. Well done to both boys, they both did themselves proud but William came out the eventual winner in 2 games 21-19 and 21-17.

With the girls it was a similar story, competitive games and some great badminton played with Carly Stevenson, Fallon Reid, Katie Hoult and Matilda Sherwin all playing fantastically to reach the semi-finals. Fallon and Carly won these games, once again both undefeated going into the final. The girls took to the court, both showing why they were finalists but Carly continued with her fantastic form this year, winning in 2 games 21-6 and 21-11.

The plate trophy competitions saw some excellent badminton with the finals being battled out between Gabriel Davey and Alex Vermaak and Sylvie Walker and Sansha Riches. Well done to Gabriel and Sylvie winning these games.

Next up were the level doubles. These games were played in a round robin with all players getting to play each other, some great badminton was played and partnerships of the future formed. Katie Hoult and Lola Dale, continuing with their successful season, won 3 of their 4 games and were the worthy runners-up. Carly and Fallon dominated the doubles, winning all 4 games and were therefore crowned champions. A similar story was seen in the boys, Jack Weston and Gabriel Davey winning 3 of the 4 games proving to be a solid partnership and worthy runners-up. William and Mitchell dominated their games once again without dropping one and being crowned boys doubles champions.

Well done to all the players and especially to Carly and Will who were crowned singles and level doubles champions 2017, both without dropping a game throughout the whole day.

National Success for Leicestershire’s Badminton Juniors

Leicestershire’s junior badminton players have recently completed their most successful season ever, with teams at all 4 junior age groups reaching the Finals of the annual Shires League, which is the most prestigious team event in the junior competition calendar. This league sees counties from all over the UK field teams of 4 boys and 4 girls at U12, U14, U16 and U18 who then competed throughout the year in regional groups with the top 8 counties contesting Finals Day at the Stoke Mandeville Stadium in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire.

With Finals Day for each age group being held throughout May, the U18 team finished the season in 8th place while the U12 youngsters, some of whom are as young as 9, improved on this to end the season in 7th place. Having faced a very tough group round which saw losses against top teams Yorkshire and Warwickshire, the U16 team did fantastically well on their Finals Day to improve their overall finish from 10th place to 6th.

With just the U14 team left to play their Finals, hopes were high that they could finish even higher, having been unbeaten throughout the season and lying in 3rd place in their League table going into the last day’s play. They beat Cheshire 15-5 in Round 1 before winning a very close rubber against Hampshire which saw the teams tied 10-10 on games won, with Leicestershire going through to the last round by just 2 points! With just Yorkshire left to face, the team repeated their group stage 13-7 victory of earlier in the season, this time winning 12-8 to take the title for the 2016/17 season – a truly historic win as this is the first time a Leicestershire team at any age group has lifted the Shires League title!

Things are looking good for the future as well – the U11 Primary Midway team won silver in Yorkshire.

Congratulations to all the players!

Success at the U16 Rising Stars

Saturday 27th May saw most of the Team Leics U16’s travel to take part in the annual Warwickshire Rising Stars competition – one of the season highlights!

With the mixed doubles event seeing a straight knockout format in a large and challenging field, only Sameer Chenia & Sophie Watson managed to progress to the quarter-finals.

The singles competition was split into an A and B event. Jess Rodgers played well to win her group and make the semi-finals of the B group before losing to eventual winner Mollie Bailey for her second singles bronze medal in 2 weeks.

In the level doubles, both boys pairs of Harry Clare & Sameer Chenia and Rowan Clark & Luke Hoult won 2 of their 3 group games with Harry & Sameer being particularly unlucky to lose their 3rd 15-11 in the 3rd against the eventual silver medallists.

In the girls event, both Leicestershire pairs of Izzy Pike & Jess Rodgers and Jess Allen & Tamsin Betts won all their group games to go through to the semi finals. Jess & Tamsin facing the top seeds Warwickshire’s Milly Evans & Caitlin Harper did well to take the first game 15-10 but were unable to hold off a very strong pair who took the next two for the win. Izzy & Jess meanwhile took on the #2 seeds Melissa Lin & Mollie Bailey. Once again the Leicestershire girls took the first end 15-9 but were unable to hold onto their early lead against the experience of the Cornwall girls. A pair of bronze medals and an excellent performance from the  Leicestershire girls which saw them take 2 of the top 4 places in a very competitive tournament.
