William ends the year with gold!

Some of the Team Leics younger PC players have been in action in recent weeks as William Sewell and Thomas Platzer took on the Nottingham U13 Bronze tournament on 26th November.  Tom played well throughout winning three of his four single games and qualifying second in his group. Despite playing some fantastic badminton, he missed going through to the quarter finals to the very strong eventual winner.

After missing out on getting through to the next round in a tough group, Will went on to dominate the plate competition winning the final 21-13 and deservedly taking the plate gold.

Tom and Will then partnered up in the doubles, and despite losing both games the boys played well and will take away valuable experience gained in their first U13 tournament together.

William then travelled to Worcestershire to play in the West Midland PC U12 bronze tournament on 10th December. With a small entry William won two of his three singles group games, only losing to the eventual winner. Taking his place in the quarter finals, Will unfortunately couldn’t turn his effort into points and eventually lost 21-18.

It was then the turn of the level doubles, William once again partnering Jack from Warwickshire and  the pair wanted to build upon their successes of recent tournaments of bronze in the U11 English Nationals and in Warwickshire. Due the small entry, it was played as a round robin competition; William and Jack maintained their form, dominating with some fantastic mature doubles play, winning all their games and their elusive gold medal!

Hopes are alive for U12 Shires team

On Sunday 4th December the U12’s took the 100 mile trek south to Hatfield for a double match against Essex and Hertfordshire in the Shires league.  The team consisted of Will, Carly, Mitchell, Sylvie, Archie and three players making their debut, Fallon, Baptiste and Matilda.

The team played a strong Essex team first and matched each other,  sharing the wins, mixed doubles 2-2 and singles 4-4, including a couple of excellent wins for two of the new players, Matilda and Baptiste in the singles.  This left the deciding games for the level doubles, every player did their part, each claiming victories and playing for one another showing a fantastic team ethic.  This and the forever enthusiastic girls gave us the edge taking the level doubles 5-3 and finishing with a well-deserved 11-9 win in a match where every player recorded wins.

Second up was Hertfordshire sporting a selection of experienced players, a match we knew would be tough.  Honours were shared again in the mixed doubles but the Singles proved too tough due to Herts’ strength in depth.  At 8-4 down in the matches and starting to fatigue against a fresher team, we were left an incredibly difficult task in the level doubles.  Despite the players continuing to work well as a team and persevering with the determination they have shown throughout, we took three of the eight games but unfortunately it proved too much and we finished 13-7 down.

The whole Leicestershire U12 squad should be incredibly proud of themselves for their efforts and commitment to the season so far.   With two Shires matches to go, we are still in with a chance to qualify.

Well done to all of you.

U14 Shires v Lincolnshire

Sunday 18th December and our 2nd Shires match of the season was against Lincolnshire at home.

We had our usual side out with the exception of Ayush who is in India . Tom Platzer stepped in and was made to feel welcome by all the players in his debut match.

We started the match with the mixed and comfortably won all 4 matches, then on to the singles where the girls didn’t struggle, winning all 4 matches only giving away 24 points in total over all 4 matches! Well done girls. The boys shared the singles winning 2 out of the 4, Owen had a gruelling 3 setter, losing the first game but fighting on to take it to 3 ends, unfortunately he lost the 3rd end to 17.  Our rookie player Tom did us proud  by winning his singles which also went to 3 ends.

We then went onto the doubles and a pattern was emerging as the girls comfortably took all 4 matches again and the same as the singles the  boys won 2 out the 4 matches.

It was obvious that Lincolnshire boys were stronger than their girls but our girls were very professional and did exactly what they needed to do for the team to win 16-4.

The girls have definitely taken a lead from this weekend with the little competition I am running for points given away in singles, come on boys you have some work to do now!

Well done to all the team.

U14 Warwickshire Bronze

Saturday 10th December and some of the Team Leics U14 squad were grateful for the chance of another local tournament and not such an early start on a dark winter weekend morning.

Players for Leicestershire today were Owen King and Lewis Whyley for the boys and Evie Pike and Grace Sherwin for the girls. With singles up first, it was Grace making the first medal chances by winning all her group games before continuing her progression into the semi finals. Here,  she once again faced her namesake, Grace Sachdeva from Yorkshire, a rapidly improving young player who she last played at the recent MK U15 Silver. In a tense match, our Grace was just pipped to the post 22-20 but took home a well-earned bronze medal nonetheless.

In the boys doubles, U14 teammates Owen and Lewis were unbeaten through the group stages, winning their quarter final with ease before also losing out in another very close semi final to the Wesh pair of Kite & Morgan, also 22-20, for another bronze medal win!

Gold Medal Rush at Derbyshire U17!

Only a few short weeks since their success at another U17 tournament in Warwickshire, U16 players Harry Clare, Sameer Chenia, Izzy Pike and Jess Rodgers teamed up again at Etwall Leisure Centre. They were joined by Joe Goodenough, Marcus Kilby, Tamsin Betts and Danny Beynon and while the venue may have changed, their winning streak still looked very much the same!

With singles to play first, Harry and Marcus brought home a pair of bronze medals; then the players stepped out for the first doubles matches…..

First to strike gold were Izzy and Jess in the girls doubles winning all their matches, closely followed by Harry and Sameer who repeated this 100% success rate in the boys doubles. Fresh from winning the mixed event at Warwickshire, Harry and Izzy were keen to repeat their previous success, winning through to the final without dropping a game. In a one-sided final which Harry dominated from the back of the court from start to finish, the end result was never in doubt with a thumping 21-10 final scoreline.

Team Leicestershire once more cleaning up in all the doubles events!

Junior Non-County Tournament

Team Leics coaches Graham and Terry organised a Junior doubles tournament at Babington on Saturday 4th December which saw a massive 130 players taking part throughout a day full of great badminton!

With boys and girls events at U10, U12, U14 and U16 it was a fantastic competitive opportunity for so many young players throughout the county with many of the younger players in particular honing their game as they prepare to move into county duties.
