U14 success in the first leg of the North Midway League!

On Sunday 19th October 16 Leicestershire players, numerous parents and volunteers travelled to Sheffield to take part in the U14 North Midway League tournament. The players were divided into two teams, a first for Leicestershire, and the nominations were handed in to the referee.
11 teams had entered and all the managers were called to the referees table for the draw to decide which groups the teams would be playing in…..luckily our 2 teams didn’t have to play each other in that first group stage!
The second team of Sam, Jess, Niall, Elisha, Brett, Emily, Rowan and Sophie had a tough draw in the first group and although didn’t win any of those matches, did win some of their games giving them some close results. In the afternoon in the next group round they won one of their matches to finish the day in 9th place overall. A good effort by the team……… for some players it was the first time they had played in a match!
The first team of Martin, Ella, Tom C, Eve, Marcus, Hritika, Sameer and Mia were drawn against Yorkshire 1 and Cheshire in the first group rounds of the day. They won both matches convincingly 8-2 to then be placed in the top group along with Nottinghamshire and Warwickshire for the next round….a true local derby triangle! The first match against Warks was a close match, the girls nudging us ahead early on by winning both of their singles games, after that we managed to hold our own to win the match 6-4! Our next match against Notts was an exciting match, ‘even stevens’ after the singles and level doubles games so it was all down to the mixed doubles……’fired up’, realising that first place was within reach our 2 mixed pairs went on to convincingly win both games…..final score 6-4!
Well done to our Leicestershire 1 team winning the first leg….bring on the second leg on Sunday 8th February, everything to play for!!
